How the Gorilla Trekking Process is Done

Are you planning a gorilla trekking experience and wondering how the entire process is carried out? At One More Adventure Safaris, we are here to bring the experience closer to your understanding, guiding you step by step through one of Africa’s most incredible wildlife adventures.
By the time your trekking day approaches, we assume your gorilla permits must have already been secured—either months or weeks in advance—and now you are ready for the real adventure.

Whether you are trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, or Volcanoes National Park, the gorilla trekking process follows almost the same procedure.

Arrival at the Park Headquarters

In Rwanda, all trekkers gather at the main park headquarters in Volcanoes National Park. In Uganda, trekkers report to the specific gorilla sector where their permit has been allocated, such as:

  • Rushaga
  • Buhoma
  • Nkuringo
  • Ruhija
  • Mgahinga

It is always important to double-check your gorilla allocation sector before the trekking day.
Upon arrival, park officials will ask for copies of your passport and gorilla permit for verification to confirm that the permits are valid.

Group Allocation and Briefing

After verification, trekkers are divided into groups and assigned to different gorilla families. This allocation is normally done depending on:

  • Physical fitness
  • Age
  • Health condition
  • Trekking ability

This is why it is very important to inform your safari company or driver guide in advance about any medical condition or mobility concerns.
At One More Adventure Safaris, we always listen carefully to our clients’ needs and trekking interests. We do our best to request gorilla families that match the client’s energy level and trekking ability for a smoother experience.

Once group allocation is completed, the ranger guides conduct a briefing session, explaining:

  • Gorilla trekking rules
  • Safety guidelines
  • Expected behavior around gorillas
  • Trekking procedures inside the forest

Preparing for the Trek

Before heading into the jungle, ensure you are properly prepared. Some important items to carry include:

  • Waterproof hiking boots with good grip
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen and skin protection
  • Rain jacket
  • Snacks and packed lunch
  • Enough drinking water
  • Camera or phone for photos and videos

Good preparation makes the trek more comfortable and enjoyable.

The Trekking Experience

After briefing, trekkers drive to the trekking starting point and begin the guided forest walk in search of the allocated gorilla family.
The trekking duration can vary from 2 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are located that day. Along the way, ranger guides share information about the forest, wildlife, birds, and gorilla behavior, making the journey educational and exciting.

The forest experience itself is magical—walking through dense jungle, crossing small streams, and hiking through the natural habitat of mountain gorillas.

Meeting the Gorillas

Once the gorillas are located, you will be allowed one full hour with them.

This is the most emotional and unforgettable part of the adventure. You will watch the gorillas:

  • Feeding
  • Grooming each other
  • Playing
  • Resting
  • Interacting within the family

You will also have enough time to take photographs and videos while maintaining the recommended viewing distance.
The ranger guides remain available throughout the visit to answer questions and help you understand the gorillas better.

End of the Trek

After the one-hour encounter, you will slowly leave the gorilla family and begin your trek back out of the forest, where your driver guide will be waiting to transfer you to your next destination or lodge.
The entire experience is rewarding, emotional, and truly life-changing.
